Breast

NSABP B-42: Postmenopausal women who have completed five years of oral hormonal therapy. Study compares using a hormonal therapy versus a placebo for years 6 - 10 to see if women have prolonged disease-free survival. Women must have remained disease free from their inital diagnosis. Must have received initial hormaonal therapy for 57 - 63 months. Tamoxifen may have been used for only 3 years or less.

NSABP B-36: Women newly diagnosed with breast cancer with no involved lymph nodes. Study compares two chemotherapy regimens used in more advanced stages of breast cancer to determine if women benefit from either regimen given in early stage breast cancer. Women must have had surgical removal of breast tumor with nodal staging procedure. No prior treatment for breast cancer.

SWOG S0307: For women with surgically removed, non-metastatic breast cancer. Study compares using 3 different agents as treatment to prevent cancer reoccurrence in the bones. Women must have adequate surgical removeal of breast cancer and be receiving standard treatment.

IBCSG 25-02: Premenopausal women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Study compares two different oral agents given for 5 years following initial diagnosis and/or breast cancer treatment of radiation and/or chemotherapy. Must have surgical removal of breast tumor with nodal staging. Must not have started chemotherapy prior to enrollment.

ST 03-103: Breast cancer patients undergoing Adjuvant Radiation Therapy who have moderate to severe fatigue. Double-Blind, Randomized Placebo-controlled study to determine the safety of oral acetyl-carnitine.

Prostate

RTOG 0232: Study comparing brachytherapy alone to radiation therapy and brachytherapy to treat intermediate risk prostate cancer.

Rectal

NSABP R-04: Newly diagnosed operable rectal cancer. Study compares a regimen of oral chemotherapy combined with intravenous chemotherapy to a regimen of two intravenous chemotherapy agents. Both regimens receive chemotherapy and radiation therapy prior to surgical removal. Must not have had surgical removal of the rectal cancer. Must not have received any prior treatment for this cancer.

Head and Neck

RTOG 0522: Newly diagnosed stage III and IV cancer of the oropharynx, hypopharynx or larynx. Study compares a regimen of chemotherapy and radiation given with or without an experimental biologic agent. May be followed by surgery for select patients. Must not have had prior chemotherapy or radiation for this cancer.

Ovarian

GOG 0218: Newly diagnosed Stage III and IV ovarian cancer or primary peritoneal cancer. Study compares a regimen of chemotherapy given every three weeks with or without an experimental biologic agent. Total treatment to be given over one year. Must not have had prior chemotherapy or radiation for this cancer.

ECOG E2805: Study comparing two oral agents as treatment for renal cancer. Patients must have had the affected kidney removed. Must not have metastatic disease or prior treatment.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)

ACOSOG Z9001: Newly diagnosed Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) Study compares the use of oral agent (Gleevec) to placebo in the treatment of GIST. Must have surgical resection of GIST. Must not have had prior treatment for this cancer.

ZIOPHARM SGL2003: Study for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, MDS or other blood disorders who have received at least 1 prior treatment and require continued treatment.
