Teaching Responsibilty

Children begin to strive toward independence and responsibility at an early age. Since both these factors must be learned it is an excellent opportunity for parents to teach these skills to their young child.

Here are some different ways to help your child become independent and responsible:

Allow your child to learn things on their own
Praise should be given to the youngster regardless of the end product. It will allow them to become used to independence and naturally seek doing projects on their own.

Let your child take part in more challenging jobs
Having your child face new challenges is a great way to promote competence. Asking for help is also a wonderful skill to teach a child. Parents do, however, need to choose jobs that are age appropriate and not overwhelming.

Allow decision making at an early age
Allow the child to start out by making simpler decisions. This will allow the child to gain the knowledge needed for more complex decisions later in childhood and through adulthood.

Children learn from what they see
By being a good model of responsibility and independence, you offer your child an example of how an adult should handle situations that can arise in life. They are likely to imitate you.

Problem solving skills should be taught from early on
These skills are essential in adolescence and adulthood, so parents should encourage their children and help their children to solve everyday problems.

Provide support and discipline to your child
Children need to know that their parents are there for them should a problem or question arise. Though a parent should promote independence the child still needs to know that they can lean on their parents for support. Also, children need rules and structure. If discipline is not provided then responsibility and independence will not be achieved.
