DEXA Scan
What is a DEXA Scan?
A DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan measures bone mineral density to check for possible bone-loss. It is one of the most accurate ways to diagnose osteoporosis and also helps in tracking the treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that may cause bone loss.
How do I prepare for a DEXA Scan?
The test in non-invasive and requries little preparation. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid wearing metals (i.e. zippers, belts, buttons.) Do not take any calcium supplements 24 hours prior to your exam.
The exam will take approximately 15 minutes. A technologist will ask you to lie on your back and will take pictures of your lower back, hips and possibly your forearm.
After the exam has been completed, the technolgist will process the scan and a radiologist will review the scan. A report will be given to your physician who will share the results with you.
