Level II Trauma Center
Innovis Health has been awarded Level II Trauma Center designation by the American College of Surgeons, a not-for-profit association of surgeons responsible for setting the standards in trauma care. Level II is the highest trauma designation obtained by any healthcare facility within the state of North Dakota.
What the various Trauma level designations mean:
A Level I designation is obtained by a facility capable of providing leadership and total care for every aspect of injury, from prevention to rehabilitation. Most Level I trauma centers are university-based teaching hospitals, which include medical residency program support and postgraduate training in trauma for physicians, nurses, and prehospital providers. Research and prevention programs, in addition to possessing Burn and Re-implantation Centers, are essential for a Level I trauma center. The nearest facility meeting Level I requirements is in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.
A Level II designation, such as Innovis Health, is a hospital that also provides initial definitive care, regardless of the severity of injury. Depending on geographic location, patient volume, personnel and resources, the Level II trauma center may or may not be able to provide the same comprehensive care as a Level I facility. There are currently 6 hospitals within the state of North Dakota meeting the requirements to obtain a Level II designation. As the highest trauma rated hospitals within the state we are charged with providing educational outreach to our rural areas in the form of professional education, consultation, and community outreach.
A Level III designation is capable of providing prompt assessment, resuscitation, emergency operations, and stabilization of trauma patients and, if necessary, arrange for transfer of care to a higher-level facility.
Level IV designation provides advanced trauma life support prior to patient transfer. A Level IV may be a clinic versus a hospital and may or may not have a physician available.
